The article discusses the liberal and conservative approaches to the policy of multiculturalism in
South Korea.Theproblems ofthe article coverthe socio-political discussion around thepolicy ofmulticulturalism
in South Korean society. The article substantiates the need to turn to socio-political discourse to understand
why the policy of multiculturalism is not consistent. During the comparative analysis, there were identified
five central issues, which are the most controversial: labor migration; marital migration; multicultural families
and children in these families; immigration of ethnic Koreans from China and post-Soviet countries; attitude
towards defectors from North Korea. As a result of the study, conclusions are drawn that the conservative
approach is close to the nationalist one, and the liberal approach to the policy of multiculturalism is guided by
the example of Western countries, but only in some aspects.
