Japan is known around the world for its «economic miracle», since the end of the XX century
began to experience an economic crisis, which is even more intense at the present time. Japan is one of the
countries that has the highest public debt relative to GDP. Nevertheless, it continues to be one of the most
economically developed countries in the world. In addition, there have recently been drastic changes in the field
of defense: the transformation of the national defense Department into a full-fledged Ministry, an increase in the
budget allocated to defense, etc. The issue of constitutional reform (amendments to article 9) is on the agenda.
The practical majority of reforms take place under the rule of the current Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe.
The purpose of the article is to study and evaluate the mutual influence of economic growth and the
strengthening of Japan’s military power.
